Stepping back in time at Bayt AlMatbouli
As you walk through the alleys of Harat (District) Al Yaman in Historic Jeddah, Bayt AlMatbouli stands like a dignified elder—its very walls whispering tales from four centuries past.
It speaks for itself through its intricate wooden latticework (rawasheen), carved doorways, and stone thresholds worn smooth by the footsteps of countless pilgrims, traders, and passersby.

Built in 1613, the house witnessed Jeddah’s transformation from a bustling artisan port to a major coastal city. Yet, its spirit remains timeless, alive with stories of hospitality and tradition.

For centuries, it opened its doors to pilgrims on long journeys, embracing them like old friends. At the tables, they tasted dishes infused with the kindness of their hosts.

While the first floor was dedicated to receiving guests, the second housed storage rooms called Bayt Al-Khazin, stocked with provisions for the season. Built-in rainwater cisterns reveal the ingenuity of Saudi builders, who mastered the art of living in a harsh climate.

And because these old homes were never just walls and roofs, Bayt Al-Matbouli was always full of life. During Ramadan, children’s laughter echoed through its halls, the sounds of nightly prayers rose from within, and the scent of oud drifted through its rooms to welcome Eid.

Time, as always, moved on. Some homes disappeared, while others faded into memory. But Bayt Al-Matbouli endured, as if refusing to be forgotten. Today, lovingly restored, it has not lost its spirit.
